Meethotamilla Garbage Dump Collapse Accident

The garbage mound located at Pothwillkumbura, Meethotamulla, Kolonnawa collapsed on the 14th of April 2017. Due to this disaster 146 houses have been destroyed, there are some infrastructure damages and 32 bodies have been recovered from the destroyed area while 8 more were missing and it affected a total of 1,765 people.

Soon after this accident took place, our team lead by Scientist Manju Gunawardana carried out the aerial survey in order to assess the damage and provided aerial surveillance in real-time enabling the authorities to take action and respond to the event with more accurate data.
